2013 Kitchen Trends: Four Predictions from Our Consultants

Our product manager checked out the latest in home illumination at the Dallas International Lighting Market show.

Whether you’re looking for a full kitchen style makeover or a quick refresh to chase away the winter blues, the latest intelligence from top manufacturers will help you on your way.

White, we missed you so. Just when we were ready to confirm that gray is still the new white, we heard that white’s not going down in 2013 without a fight. (Some of our consultants suspect that gray is more of a bathroom trend than a kitchen phenom.) Word on the street is that the return of white is a result of this year’s nod toward contemporary styles, plus – believe it or not — the influence of Apple products on everything we do. Siri, paint my kitchen.

Lighting trends depend on your zip code. Our product manager, Curt, just returned from the Dallas International Lighting Market trade show with piles of news and cool photos like the one above — you’ll see lots more on our Facebook page. He told us that in most parts of the country, small, sleek lights are trending due to a design drift toward maximizing compact urban spaces. However, oversized lamps and fixtures are on the uptick in parts of the South. Regions of the US are like siblings – we love each other, but we rarely agree.

Sinks are tracking regionally as well. Sales of classic double basin kitchen sinks are rising nationally, but if you’re an Oregonian or a Washingtonian, chances are you prefer an oversized single basin or farmhouse style sink. We’ve always admired that independent Northwest spirit.

Hands free kitchen faucets are coming into their own.  The new Moen MotionSense™ faucet offers advanced dual sensors that even work when the handle is in the OFF position. Wave your hand over the top of the spout or place hands under it to operate.  Moen is not the only manufacturer with offerings in this space: Delta pioneered hands free and others have joined in as well. Everyone’s favorite application for this feature: messy germy chicken hands.

Do you think the region you live in influences your design choices? We’d love to know, so post a comment or LIKE us on Facebook . We’ve got lots more kitchen trends to share, so don’t forget to sign up for emails. Enjoy this post? Share it with your friends!
